The claim that offshore wind development is causing record numbers of endangered whale deaths off America’s East Coast is not supported by scientific evidence.(1) The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has found no direct link between offshore wind development and increased whale deaths.(2)The primary threats to endangered whale populations, particularly the North Atlantic right whale, are vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear which together account for 75% of anthropogenic whale deaths.(2)Additionally, offshore wind energy reduces reliance on fossil fuels, helping to combat ocean acidification and climate change, which are significant long-term threats to marine ecosystems.(3)
