The claim that offshore wind development will destroy the U.S. fishing industry is unfounded. Careful planning and management can ensure that offshore wind and fishing industries coexist successfully.Offshore wind lease areas only occupy a small fraction of the sea floor. Careful coordination with federal agencies such as the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the U.S. Coast Guard ensures that these areas can still be accessible for commercial and recreational fishing, boating, and tourism. Through leveraging lessons learned in developing Europe's established offshore wind industry, projects are designed with multi-use considerations, which allow fishermen to continue their activities in and around wind farms without significant disruption.(1)
