The concern that electric vehicle (EV) batteries will end up in landfills is inaccurate. EV batteries are designed for long-term use, and even when they reach the end of their automotive life, they are repurposed or recycled rather than discarded in landfills. (1)EV batteries are built to last. Most EV manufacturers offer warranties that cover battery performance for seven to eight years or approximately 100,000 miles. However, many EV batteries are expected to last well beyond this, potentially outlasting the vehicles themselves.(1) This longevity reduces the frequency of battery replacements and contributes to a lower environmental footprint over time.Even after an EV battery can no longer efficiently power a vehicle, it does not necessarily end up in a landfill. There are varying options for batteries to either be repurposed for secondary use or recycled, supporting the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of battery production.(1) One common secondary use for EV batteries is in energy storage systems for homes or businesses, where they can store renewable energy such as solar power.(1)
