The belief that geothermal energy systems are only viable in regions with volcanic activity or natural hot springs is a misconception. While high-temperature geothermal resources are commonly found in such areas, modern geothermal systems, especially technologies that leverage heat pumps, can be utilized almost anywhere, making them a versatile option for heating and cooling.(2)Ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) make use of the stable temperatures found just a few feet below the Earth's surface, which remain relatively constant throughout the year. This allows them to provide efficient heating in the winter and cooling in the summer, regardless of the surface climate or proximity to geothermal hotspots like volcanic regions or hot springs.(1)(2)Regions with volcanic activity often utilize high-temperature geothermal resources for electricity generation, lower-temperature geothermal energy is available almost everywhere.(2)
