The claim that renewable energy is "all about wind and solar" overlooks the critical role that hydropower plays in global energy production. In fact, hydropower is the world’s largest source of low-carbon electricity, providing a significant share of renewable energy that is often overshadowed by wind and solar discussions.(1)In 2023, hydropower generated around 14% of the world’s electricity, contributing approximately 4,185 TWh.(1) This figure is comparable to the combined total output of all other renewable energy sources, including wind and solar. Hydropower remains an essential part of the global energy mix, providing stable, large-scale electricity generation that complements the intermittent nature of wind and solar energy. Additionally, hydropower has been crucial for balancing energy grids, given its capacity for on-demand energy generation, something that wind and solar energy alone cannot provide. While wind and solar energy are integral to the renewable energy landscape, hydropower plays an equally important role.
