Research shows that battery replacements in EVs are infrequent and do not need to be replaced regularly; on the contrary, many manufacturers offer an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty and the DOE has completed studies suggesting that EV batteries can last as long as 15 years.(3) A study of about 15,000 EVs, from early models to those produced through 2023, found that battery replacements due to failure occurred at an average rate of just 2.5%, excluding major recalls.(1) Since 2016, advances in battery technology have driven this failure rate even lower, with failures dropping to below 0.5%(2). In fact, 97.5% of EVs are still using their original batteries, and the replacement rate for EVs manufactured after 2016 is under 1%.(1).
