NECEC, AEE Applaud Northeast States on Agreement to Strengthen the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

Wednesday, August 23, 2017

Today, the Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC) and its national partner Advanced Energy Economy (AEE), released the following statements regarding the bipartisan agreement announced by RGGI Inc. to expand the Northeast Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

"NECEC commends the governors of the RGGI states for their leadership to extend and strengthen RGGI through 2030. RGGI investments have lowered customer bills over $4.67 billion in lifetime savings, while helping grow a robust clean energy industry in the participating northeastern states,” said NECEC President Peter Rothstein. “This agreement will send a strong market signal to the industry, continue to deliver ratepayer savings and spur cost-effective development in the power sector through clean energy technologies and services. As the transition to a clean energy economy continues, RGGI will serve as a shining example of what is possible through bipartisan collaboration to address climate change by advancing clean energy."

"The RGGI states have proven that existing technology can be cost-effectively deployed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create jobs," said Malcolm Woolf, senior vice president for policy at national business group, Advanced Energy Economy. "We applaud the leadership shown by the RGGI states by extending and strengthening the emissions target, which sends a consistent market signal to drive further economic expansion of advanced energy, which is already a $200 billion industry that supports more than 3 million jobs across America.”
